Extreme Architecture aims to compare visions of architecture and design that are the result of stimuli coming from extreme, unorthodox and necessarily difficult themes and situations, which lead to radical visions and choices. Arte Sella, which historically explores the delicate relationship between Artifice and Nature through art, architecture and design, will host a meeting on the themes of architecture on other planets and in Space, design and the contaminations and influences of ‘extraterrestrial’ thought and finally how extreme situations and themes – social, climatic, technological – on planet Earth should be resolved with innovative strategies and with challenges equal to, if not more complex than, those faced in space scenarios.

The headquarters of the Bari Chamber of Commerce is the stage for this stage of the Festival Architettura METAMORPHOSIS: TRANSFORMING ITALIAN ARCHITECTURE. The event, organised in collaboration with the ArCoD department of the Polytechnic University of Bari and Confartigianato Bari-BAT-Brindisi, brings to the centre of the debate a crucial theme for the future of construction: ‘Regenerating the places of the Earth, learning from stone architecture’. The inaugural conference will be attended by renowned architects and academics from Italy and abroad. Through speeches and debates, the potential of stone architecture as a tool for land regeneration and eco-responsible construction for the future will be explored.

The relationship between Earth and Space, observed through the lens of architecture, invites us to reflect on the metamorphoses necessary to face global challenges. The study of space offers innovative solutions – systems, technologies, new ways of living – that can be applied to the built environment on Earth, which is being severely tested by the effects of climate change. Furthermore, space missions remind us of how fragile the Earth is when seen from orbit, raising awareness of the need to preserve our habitat through responsible, ethical and sustainable choices.

Artificial intelligence, although often considered a recent revolution, has deep roots and has long been a powerful tool for innovation. It allows us to overcome limits, optimise resources and bridge gaps, including ethical and social ones. Historically, women have played a fundamental role in innovation, although it is often invisible. When used fairly, AI can amplify these voices, favouring a more inclusive design. Thanks to AI, it is therefore possible to rethink living and our way of investigating the present, orienting the uncertainty of the present towards a more sustainable future, made up of physical and social habitats capable of enhancing all talents, including female talents.

The dystopian landscapes evoked in literature, cinema and videogames have a worrying correspondence in contemporary reality, lashed by the effects of climate change. Furthermore, abandoned infrastructures, such as inactive industrial centres or mining areas, and portions of post-disaster landscapes are dotting the land with desolate scenarios that are no longer just images of a hypothetical future, but the evolution of an ecosystem in crisis, the representation of a systemic failure of the interactions between human beings and Nature. A dystopia necessary to reflect on the disconnection between humanity and the environment, to learn from failures and to rethink a future in which ecosystems, architecture and landscape coexist in harmony, transforming destruction into opportunity.

Sea level rise, violent storms, drought and increasing desertification are some of the manifestations of the imbalance of our ecosystem that poses a crucial challenge for the cities and architecture of the future: coexisting with water and its changes in state. Floating buildings and neighbourhoods, adaptive infrastructures and protective barriers, amphibious cities are some of the forms of adaptation that have resulted from a new relationship between Nature and the built environment. We are facing a revolution that is not only technical, but also cultural, that will lead us to consider the seas, oceans and glaciers as the soul of our planet, elements that, as space missions teach us, are rare and precious as well as fundamental for life.

For Milan Design Week, the festival Metamorphosis – Transforming Italian Architecture is offering a series of readings and interviews with professionals from the world of design and beyond. La Fabbrica del Vapore will become a meeting place for academics, architects, journalists and writers from Italy and abroad, invited to explore the most pressing contemporary issues from an unusual point of view: Space and its relationship with planet Earth. The audience will be taken on an exploratory journey through the themes of transformation and terraforming, spatial design and architecture, climate change and new dystopian and imaginary landscapes, thus developing a critical eye on the emerging perspectives that are redefining our way of living, inhabiting and imagining the future.
